Effective date: January 1, 2026
Coast is built on a single principle: your financial data is yours. The app has no servers, no accounts, no analytics SDK, and no telemetry. This page describes exactly what Coast stores, where it stores it, and what it never does.
What Coast stores
Coast stores the following data locally on your Mac, and only there:
- Financial inputs: your monthly income, expenses, savings, and investment totals. Stored in the app's sandboxed UserDefaults container, accessible only to Coast.
- Settings and preferences: calculator mode, currency, menu bar display, appearance, and privacy toggles. Also stored in UserDefaults.
- Sensitive figures: specific monetary amounts are stored in the macOS Keychain, encrypted at rest by the operating system.
- Export files: if you use JSON export, the file is saved to a location you choose. Coast does not retain a copy.
What Coast never does
- Transmit any data to a server
- Connect to the internet (the app has no network entitlements)
- Collect analytics, crash reports, or usage telemetry
- Require or create an account
- Share any data with third parties (there are no third parties)
- Sync data across devices via iCloud or any other service
Privacy controls built into the app
Coast gives you explicit control over when your data is visible:
- Touch ID / Apple Watch reveal: all monetary amounts are hidden by default and require biometric authentication or your Mac password to reveal. Locking your screen resets the session.
- Stealth mode: the menu bar shows only the progress gauge. No percentage, no balance, no context that could reveal financial information. The full panel is locked until you authenticate.
- Blurred amounts: when the reveal toggle is off, all figures display as ●●●●, so casual screen sharing or shoulder-surfing does not expose your numbers.
Your exported data
If you export your data as JSON, the file contains all your inputs and settings in plain text. This file is yours entirely. Coast has no record of the export and cannot retrieve or access exported files. Treat it with the same care you would give any financial document.
Purchase data
If you purchase Coast directly, your transaction is processed by our payment provider. The license key associated with your purchase is stored locally in the macOS Keychain. Coast does not receive or store your name, email, or payment information. The payment provider handles all of that under their own privacy policy.
Children's privacy
Coast does not target or knowingly collect information from children under 13. Because Coast collects no personal data at all, there is no data related to any user, of any age, to protect or disclose.
Changes to this policy
If we ever change how Coast handles data, we will update this page and the effective date above. Because the app has no accounts, we cannot notify you by email. Check this page or our release notes for any changes.
